The Sainte-Marie d'Auch Cathedral, a jewel of Gers heritage, is a major religious building, bearing witness to several centuries of history. Its construction, begun in 1489 on the foundations of an old Romanesque church, lasted nearly 200 years, completing in 1680. This long period explains the richness of its architectural style, mixing the influences of flamboyant Gothic for its vaults and structure and Renaissance for its majestic façade. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela, it is an essential stopover site on the way to Arles.
The cathedral's interior houses exceptional artistic treasures. These include a set of stained-glass windows dating from the 16th century, the work of master glassmaker Arnaut de Moles, whose fine details and brilliant colors are remarkable. The great organ by Jean de Joyeuse, completed at the end of the 17th century, is considered one of the finest in France, with its sculpted organcase. In addition, the wooden choir stalls, carved with incredible detail, are a Renaissance masterpiece.
Saint Mary's Cathedral is therefore an essential stop for pilgrims and lovers of art and history.
