A walking tour full of discoveries

The car park at the old cloister is convenient for free parking while being close to the city centre, not far from Sainte-Marie Cathedral, the monumental staircase and the Armagnac tower. (former prison and courthouse from the 14th century). This district, one of the richest in terms of historical heritage in the city, leads you to the monumental Italian-inspired staircase.

Once at the top, take the time to admire the fabulous panorama that offers a glimpse of the Pyrenees mountain range, before descending a few levels. Each one is different, revealing magnificent fountains and sculptures, veritable Roman compositions with a bohemian and romantic feel. One of the levels features the Observatory of Time, a contemporary sculpture by Jaume Plensa. It is a text written entirely in Latin that repeats the word NOAH many times. By deduction, it is therefore an excerpt from the Bible concerning the Flood.

Further on, the famous musketeer d'Artagnan appears, proudly admiring and protecting the city of Auch and its inhabitants. He doesn't shy away from a few selfies, but he remains very professional, standing at attention, like a valiant Musketeer.

A surprising cathedral to visit

As you walk back up towards the upper town, you'll discover the cathedral, reminiscent of Notre-Dame de Paris. You can also visit the cathedral treasury every day from June to September. The rest of the year, visits are available for groups by appointment. Don't forget to look up; you might spot the Napoleon Column, the fresco commemorating his visit to Auch in 1808.

You'll see 113 wooden stalls depicting over 1,500 figures. There's a platform lift for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. A very good initiative! It's a beautiful cathedral, with magnificent stained-glass windows. It's quite pleasant to stroll through the ambulatory and discover each of the small axial chapels.
