Eauze is a very pretty town in the heart of the wine-growing region in the north of the department. But above all, it's the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) that passes through it, imbuing the town with a gentle and welcoming atmosphere. We spent a few days there, and we've brought back some souvenirs and a great place to stay for a rest on the pilgrimage or simply to meet some charming hosts!

Capital of Armagnac

Eauze is an ancient town, home to exceptional Gallo-Roman remains (there's also an ancient Domus to visit nearby in Montréal, the Villa Séviac; we'll tell you about it next time...). Strolling through its streets is like taking a journey back in time. Start your visit in the town center near the magnificent Gothic-style Saint-Luperc Cathedral. Admire the beautiful half-timbered houses. It's lovely to have a drink in the small square during the warmer months. To see some beautiful artifacts, head to the Archaeological Treasure Museum, where you'll discover coins, jewelry, and precious objects unearthed during excavations in the town. A little outside the center, you can visit the Domus de Cieutat, an archaeological and interpretive site connected to the Villa Séviac. If you'd like to see bullfights, you should know that Eauze has an arena, Nimeño II, where shows are held regularly. In Eauze, we also enjoyed the Pouy site and strolled along the lakes after exploring the town.

A must-see visit in the heart of Bas-Armagnac? Château Saint-Aubin, a magnificent 200-hectare estate, 50 of which are dedicated to vines, with around ten grape varieties. Located less than 10 minutes from Eauze, the Westphal family produces exceptional Bas-Armagnac and red and white Côtes de Gascogne with local flavors, which can also be found on their online store. Contact Château Saint-Aubin for a visit followed by a tasting, they will love to tell you about their passion.

If you visit the city in July, you can attend the Roman Gallop Festival in the arena. In August, there's a renowned Comic Book Festival, and at the end of January, the Saint-Vincent festival, a celebration of the winemakers, brings the ancient city to life. In May, antique dealers take center stage with the Antiques Fair.

On the Way of St. James, an inn and smiles

In Eauze, the Via Podiensis (the Way of Le Puy-en-Velay) is a major route that sees thousands of walkers pass through each year. Coming from Condom or Larressingle, pilgrims find a welcome respite here before continuing their journey towards Nogaro. The Gers region is, in fact, a prime area for walking, as it is also crossed further south by the Via Tolosana.

This tradition of hospitality is felt everywhere in the town. Eauze offers a beautiful diversity of accommodation adapted to all needs: simple and functional municipal or private gîtes for pilgrims in search of authenticity, but also charming bed and breakfasts for those looking for more comfortable accommodation after a day of walking.

Staying in Eauze is above all about experiencing Gascon hospitality. Many hosts, passionate about their region, open their doors to share a friendly drink, a meal at their communal table, or valuable advice on hiking trails. It's the perfect opportunity to exchange travel stories, get your pilgrim's passport stamped, and recharge in a verdant setting, often just a stone's throw from the historic center.

Whether you are a keen walker or simply a visitor, taking the time for a night in Eauze allows you to soak up this unique atmosphere of kindness that floats in the streets of the ancient city.
