Take advantage of a trip to Lavardens to visit its castle, a magnificent 12th century building open year-round. Throughout its nine centuries of history, it has hosted distinguished guests and been the object of much covetousness, which you will undoubtedly discover. An impressive fortress, Lavardens Castle was attacked and partially destroyed, then abandoned before being restored. Today, a preservation and renovation association allows visitors to discover this relic of the past and its history.

A visit to a tumultuous castle

Numerous exhibitions take place throughout the year within the castle walls, showcasing paintings, recitals, glasswork, and nativity figurines, as was the case during our visit. Admire the collections displayed in this beautiful stone setting before continuing your tour.

Open Monday to Sunday, Lavardens Castle can be explored independently or with a guided tour on Sunday afternoons for groups of 10 or more. Begin in the video room beneath a beautiful 17th century vaulted ceiling, held together solely by the strength of sand, lime, and stone—a true architectural feat ! The 10-minute film presents the history of the castle, its renovations, and its restorations over time. Listen to the excellent acoustics provided by the stone walls! The film also sheds light on the owners' vision and desire to transform this fortress into a beautiful pleasure castle.

The echo room is a true mystery! Its unique resonance keeps even the smallest secrets hidden, never to be revealed. Try it: if two people stand in opposite corners and whisper a secret, no one else in the room will hear a thing! Amazing, isn't it?

Take the opportunity to visit Lavardens, one of the most beautiful villages in France!

In each room, you have access to explanatory panels divided into two parts: one historical and the other architectural. These texts help you understand the construction phases and the historical context of each situation. Take the time to observe the superb floors, some with beautiful terracotta tiles and decorative details, as well as the spaciousness of the vaulted and light-filled rooms.

A little effort is then required to climb the floors and landings. Don't forget to open your eyes to admire the evolution of the stones, walls, and floors, witnesses to the castle's history through time. Lavardens is like an open book, telling its story in its own way. Once upstairs, contemplate the 17th century pavement, unique in the world ! Indeed, each room features a different geometric pattern, a beautiful blend of stone and brick.

The exhibitions vary throughout the year. During our visit, the nativity figurines were in the spotlight with more than 15,000 representations ! What a pleasure to observe this truly magical setting where the figurines are staged, alone or with a natural environment composed of sand, stone or vegetation.
