The castle of Caumont, classified historic monument, is the largest castle of the Gers
The Château de Caumont is a listed Renaissance monument restored by generations of passionate owners. It is located 35 minutes from Toulouse, in the heart of a wooded property of 50 hectares.
The castle is composed of two buildings:- The old castle built on the site of a fortified castle that belonged to Gaston Phébus; this is the older part, of a more typically medieval architecture, dates from the 15th century. It is what remains of the original castle. This part covers today the reception rooms and the store
- And the current Renaissance castle whose construction lasted from 1525 to 1535. This building owes its nickname of "castle of the Loire in Gascony" to its so particular architecture, emblematic of the castles of the Loire. Indeed, this Renaissance jewel was built by Pierre de Nogaret de La Valette after his return from the Italian wars that he fought with François 1er, inspired by the Italian Renaissance.
Caumont was the birthplace of Jean-Louis de Nogaret de la Valete in 1554, who became Duke of Epernon by the grace of Henry III, whom he served before Henry IV and Louis XIII. He embellished Caumont which became a witness of his power. Henri IV came to visit him several times and the room in which he slept has been preserved. Caumont has continued this tradition of welcoming sovereigns by receiving the visit of the Queen of England, Queen Mum in 1988.
In addition to private events (weddings, seminars, film shoots), many events open to the public are organized at Caumont throughout the year: concerts, conferences, flea markets, historical events, look at our site, there is something for everyone!PRACTICAL INFORMATION
