The church of Sainte-Mère, located in the Gers, is not an isolated monument, but a building whose history is closely linked to that of the old fortified castle of the village. Built in the 13th century as a castle chapel, it was considerably modified and enlarged in the 16th century with the addition of a pentagonal choir and two side chapels. The building, partially listed as a Historic Monument in 1973, is an example of how religious buildings in the region have evolved over time.
