Mauvezin: Discovery walk between upper town and lower town

Mauvezin
Mauvezin: Discovery w ...

Mauvezin is part of the Territory of Arrats and Save, just like Sarrant and Monfort. This is THE territory where goose and duck are the most famous and therefore raised and processed, for our greatest delight.

One of the specificities of Mauvezin is to have an "upper town" and a "lower town". Each of these two parts has its historical, heritage and architectural riches. This is why it is not necessary to be satisfied with a halt in "lower town" to understand and apprehend Mauvezin.

The “lower town” and its old medieval bastide

It is at the level of the "lower town" that you can admire the Halle de Mauvezin as well as the remarkable architectural ensemble that completes it.

Meet at Place de la Liberation. In the past, this square was called "le Trépadé". It was a military gathering place. But once the hall was built, the military function disappeared, giving way to commerce.

Take the time to contemplate all these stone houses with these ancient arcades. Know that one of these buildings housed the house of Henri IV! This is where the current post office is located. The Town Hall is also a remarkable building that is worth a look.

The hall, on the other hand, is immense, and if you observe it from below, you will be able to appreciate the magnificent work of the wooden frame and architecture which allows the support of the tiled roof, and which gives the building a certain charm and a crazy authenticity. The stone pillars were designed as columns and give the building a lighter and more slender appearance.

Religion also has its place in the “lower town”. During your stroll, you will discover an old Protestant temple. Indeed, Jeanne d'Albret invested a lot so that Mauvezin became a Protestant center.

The upper town: a panorama of the surroundings

At the level of the upper town, you will be able to see some arcades, but which, despite all their charm, have nothing to envy to those of the "lower town", as well as the so-called "curé" fountain.

Nearby is the Saint-Michel de Mauvezin church. It was built during the 13th century, but was destroyed during the wars of religion. Its reconstruction dates from the 19th century. Take a close look at his tower… Do you see anything surprising? Its base is square while the top of the bell tower is octagonal!

Enjoy the castle walk and head to the castle terraces. Inhale and catch your eyes! The view is breathtaking and you can take the opportunity to take a short break, time for a snack or a reading on one of the benches.

An orientation table has been installed for a good reading of the landscape. You will distinguish, among others, the Tour Jeanne d'Albret.

Nature and greenery at Lac de Mauvezin

At the entrance to the village, a green natural area awaits you and welcomes you for a nature break or a picnic stop. You can take advantage of this stopover to fish, observe the fauna and flora or take a short walk along the path.
