    • FLARAN ABBEY, DEPARTMENTAL HERITAGE CENTER

Founded in 1151 in the Baïse valley, south of Condom, on the Agen-Auch axis. Benefiting from an exceptional and preserved setting, the Cistercian abbey of Flaran (12th-18th centuries) is one of the best preserved in the South-West of France (site, buildings and gardens classified as Historic Monuments).

The monastic buildings and the gardens located in the heart of a huge park, therefore present a particular readability, perfect and attractive illustration of a Cistercian ensemble that appeared in the 12th century and was reworked until the 18th century.
Around the cloister (12th-14th century) and the Church (12th-13th century), this surprisingly well-preserved complex extends over more than 2000 m² and allows a unique approach to the life of the Cistercian community settled here, in the heart of the Middle -age, in full apogee of the order.]

Since 2000, the abbey has housed the Departmental Conservation of Heritage and Museums/Flaran, service of the Gers Departmental Council). It develops, throughout the year, many cultural events (exhibitions, concerts, conferences, courses and shows, etc.) that interest all areas of Heritage and artistic creation, from Archeology to Art. contemporary.

The service, which also ensures the scientific management of the Gers network of sites and "Museums of France", aims to participate in the cultural irrigation of the territory, in particular around the famous "Simonow" collection (from the name of its depositary), exceptional collection of illustrious artists from the 16th to the 21st century.

Pivotal to the cultural policy voted by the Departmental Assembly, the most visited public site in the Gers, Flaran Abbey is the subject of a multi-year development project carried out by the owner community. As such, it benefits from the regional label "Grand Site d'Occitanie", under the name "Armagnac, Abbaye et Cités".

A very relaxing and interesting place to go and spend a few hours learning some new history and looking around the Abbey and Gardens. There is art on display too which is nice to view in a relaxed environment. No coffee shop but there is shaded parking under the trees if you can so nice for a picnic. It is 15 kilometers from Condom and also the same from Montréal if you want a nice Café au lait!

Beautiful small abbey. Very nicely restored. Dates back from 1151. Beautiful private art collection. The surroundings and gardens are beautiful. Serenity surrounds the area. Well worth a visit.

No question this site is well worth a detour. As others have said, the former monastery is home to a major collection of art, works which merit a far wider audience than we witnessed on a Monday...

Begun in the 12th century, the main abbey buildings are fine examples of some good, solid Romanesque architecture. It's Cistercian, so there probably wasn't much in the way of decoration, and what...
