La Romieu obtained the label of the Most Beautiful Villages of France on June 30, 2018. 2018 was an exceptional year for La Romieu because we commemorated the 700th anniversary of the foundation of the Colégiale Saint-Pierre (1318-2018) and we celebrated the 20th anniversary of its classification at UNESCO (1998-2018).
La Romieu was originally a modest priory founded by two monks returning from a pilgrimage to Rome, hence the name "LARROUMIEU" meaning in Gascon language "PELGRIMIN". This foundation would be dated 1062.
In the 14th century, the village gained importance when Arnaud d' Aux, a high dignitary of the Pontifical Court and a local child, raised the Collegiate Church of Saint Pierre (1312-1318), the cloister and the palace in the village. He transformed the Benedictine community into a college of 14 regular canons, led by a dean and a subdean.
The collegiate church built between 1312 and 1318 has the plan of a large chapel. It has no direct access to the street, as it was closed to the people until the French revolution. Access to the church is through the Gothic cloister. The collegiate church is built between two 33 m high towers. The octagonal tower to the east, which can be accessed.
